Barcelona is the capital of Catalonia. It is the second-most populated metropolitan region in Spain with 5.7M people (1,62M in the city of Barcelona) and the 5th most populous urban area in EU.

It concentrates more than 67% of the population of Catalonia and is a major technological hub attracting national and international companies. Several international universities scattered around and in the periphery of the city. The Mobility System of the Barcelona Metropolitan Area (SIMMB) comprises 314 municipalities.
Barcelona is a major transportation hub by the sea with an international airport and port. The metropolitan area has a dense public multimodal transportation system that includes metro, bus, train and tram with a Unified Tariff System. It has automated metro lines and shared mobility solutions. The road infrastructures are well- developed with a ring road that carries 250 000 daily vehicles.

It is a major touristic attraction accounting for 15 million visitors during 2024. It organizes several worldwide yearly events including the Smart City Expo World Congress and the Mobile World Congress.

Geographical relevance

A high-density city surrounded by highly populated suburbs. There are significant mobility flows between them, including daily commuters and access to services such as hospitals or universities.

Major international freight hub (one of the main Mediterranean ports, international airport, located on TEN-T corridor). It is a linear settlement’ with hills and sloped terrain. The infrastructures and services are advanced, for both people and goods.
 
Cultural relevance

Multicultural and multi-ethnic population with strong tourism mobility. Strong pressure from citizens for less noise and emissions within the metropolis. Mainly tertiary jobs in city, industrial firms in peri-urban areas with increasing presence of international companies and entrepreneurs. Flexibility of remote working, acceptance of shift from private car to MaaS and shared solutions, automated solutions and services, etc.
 
Policy relevance

The main objective of the transportation authorities is to increase the usage of public transportation and decrease the use of private cars that produce daily congestion in the main corridors. CCAM is already considered in the Mobility Master Plan of the Metropolitan Mobility System of Barcelona. Several services and options are being studied in the context of CCAM. Regular movements of people, such as commuting, are one of the main axes. The priority for the next Mobility Plan is to build a strategy to be able to reach equally the whole population when deploying CCAM, both from geographical/cultural point of view.
 
Target user groups and stakeholders

The target user groups in the Barcelona are commuters (students and workers) and residents. The stakeholders that will be engaged are governments, municipalities, local authorities, academia and NGOs.
