Driving Diversity in Transport: The Project heads to the ITS European Congress

23-04-2025

The Diversify-CCAM partnership is excited to share that the project will be showcased during a variety of sessions at the upcoming ITS European Congress in Seville, Spain.

The ITS Congresses bridge the worlds of mobility, technology, and innovation, gathering experts, policymakers, and stakeholders from industry and academia to advance the intelligent transport systems (ITS) field. Recognising that mobility challenges transcend borders, these Congresses address not only local and national concerns but also global ones, fostering a worldwide dialogue on smart mobility solutions.

The 2025 ITS European Congress in Seville represents an important moment for stakeholders from across Europe and beyond to come together and explore future-oriented solutions for inclusive, clean, resilient, and smart mobility. Diversify-CCAM will be showcased during three thought-provoking sessions:

Panel discussion: Redefining user-centric CCAM innovation

Tuesday 20th May 2025, 14:00 – 15:00

As CCAM reshapes the present and future of mobility, ensuring inclusivity and equity becomes paramount. Hosted by Nicola Hare (PAVE Europe), this session will showcase experiences from panellists from around the world on ongoing CCAM initiatives impacting citizens’ lives, while providing key insights into how participatory and behavioural approaches can place human needs at the centre of technological advancement.

The discussion will explore innovative strategies for co-designing mobility solutions, emphasising the voices of traditionally under-represented groups (e.g., tech-adverse people, elderly, etc.). It will highlight real-world examples of CCAM involving participatory approaches that bridge the gap between technology and societal needs. Behavioural insights will also take centre stage, understanding how user preferences, cultural and geographical factors, habits, and barriers can drive equitable access to CCAM technologies.

We are delighted to be joined for this insightful and interactive session by the following experts:

  • Stella Nikolaou, CERTH
  • Suzanna Kraak, European Commission
  • Dr Joscha Wasser, Holon
  • Jordi Martín, ATM

What could inclusive, diverse, automated public transport look like?

Tuesday 20th May 2025, 16:45 - 17:45

This interactive session will engage the audience to consider the future of infrastructure and in-vehicle design, policies, and future projects for for automated, road-based public transport systems. While automated vehicles has been primarily seen in taxis and low-speed, free shuttles operating in campus / controlled environments, the next challenge lies in scaling this technology to buses and in broader urban areas. This transition raises critical questions about how to create seamless, inclusive, and enjoyable customer experiences that cater to all demographics, ensuring no group is left behind. Particular attention must be given to the needs of women, the elderly, those from different cultures and those people with disabilities or mobility challenges.

This session will invite the panel with experience in automated mobility in public transport, the adaptation to a user-centric design, highlighting the importance of cultural and geographical particularities. Together with the audience, we will consider practical considerations for automated buses such as how to open a bus door if there is no driver present, what to do in an emergency, anti-social behaviour, the feeling of security and how to provide access for those people in wheelchairs.

Through engaging dialogue and audience participation, this session will consider potential solutions for making automated public transport systems inclusive, safe, and practical for a diverse range of users. This can then inform future policy, deployments and projects in automated transport systems.

Diversify-CCAM will be represented by Project Coordinator Anna Anund alongside experts from other European initiatives and organisations. The speaking lineup includes:

  • Mauro Dell'Amico, UNIMORE - Sinfonica Project
  • Margarita Martinez Diaz, UPC - CulturalRoad Project
  • Anna Anund, VTI - Diversify-CCAM Project
  • Sandra Witzel - Skedgo
  • Laura Alciauskaite - Independent

Integrating Diversity Factors in Mobility Data Collection and Analysis: The Baix Penedès Case Study

In order to perform a good characterisation of the aspects that affect the diversity of road users, it is necessary to take into account the uniqueness that represents the user background and all the variables of their geographical environment, policy context and cultural condition, as it influences decision-making in relation to its personal mobility, and furthermore, its impact on lifestyle and travel behaviour.

This paper, written by Natialia Gonzalez Gallego (Applus+IDIADA) relates the first steps of one of the twelve pilot sites that take part in the Diversify-CCAM project. The Case Study is about the application of the studies into the Baix Penedès region, a county located in the Province of Tarragona (Spain). The results of this first analysis will reflect the indicators that will be used to perform an accurate data collection using different methodologies.

Exploring cultural diversity in mobility behaviour and CCAM acceptance

Wednesday 21st May, 14:00 - 15:00

This presentation will explore how cultural factors influence the acceptance of CCAM in Europe, drawing on the Diversify-CCAM project to highlight key cultural categories such as governance and innovation culture. Using case studies from four European cities, located in Germany and Greece, and stakeholder interviews from twelve pilot sites, the analysis captures both broad trends and local nuances, while offering insights into how cultural diversity shapes mobility behavior and CCAM adoption. Hosted by Despina Tsolisou (CERTH) and featuring insights from Stella Nikolaou (CERTH) and John Anderson (DLR).
