Understanding Europe's Transport Needs with our Baseline Mobility Survey

24-04-2025

In the coming days, the Diversify-CCAM project will launch an in-depth Baseline Mobility Survey, designed to gather key data about how different stakeholder groups move around the project's 12 pilot locations.

The Diversify-CCAM Baseline Mobility Survey is a key milestone in the Diversify-CCAM project, launched to support the development of more inclusive, fair, and accessible CCAM systems across Europe by integrating geographical, policy-related, and cultural dimensions. True inclusiveness considers all voices, and the survey results will reflect the real diversity across Europe's tarnsport users, rather than just how the average person moves around. Our survey is a cornerstone in our mission to make CCAM truly inclusive and equitable.

To understand the Diversify-CCAM Baseline Mobility Survey in more detail, we sat down with Eva Adamovska, Researcher in Human-Centred Transport Systems at project partner CDV.

Hi Eva, thanks for speaking with us! Can you please explain the purpose of the Diversify-CCAM Baseline Mobility Survey?

"The survey is based on a taxonomy of geographical, policy, cultural and other diversity-related aspects, which was developed through a comprehensive literature review, case studies analysis and expert interviews conducted across 12 pilot sites in 6 European countries. It targets a broad spectrum of mobility users—including residents, commuters, visitors, and tourists—and seeks to explore how specific diversity aspects influence mobility behaviours, needs, and attitudes."

Why is this survey important in the context of the Diversify-CCAM project?

"The survey will quantitatively assess the influence of various diversity aspects on mobility needs, attitudes, and the acceptance and adoption of CCAM, allowing for comparisons between pilot sites. This initial major data collection phase will establish a crucial knowledge base that will feed subsequent project activities and more tailored qualitative data collection at each pilot site."

How will the survey contribute to the Diversify-CCAM goal of achiecving inclusiveness and equity within the European mobility ecosystem?

"By targeting specific, measurable aspects of diversity, the survey moves beyond a 'one-size-fits-all approach'. Instead, it embraces the complexities of regional differences to help shape mobility solutions that are inclusive and equitable."

How will participants be encouraged to complete the survey?

"To enhance participation, engagement strategies will be tailored to each pilot site, drawing on local knowledge and experience. Sites are encouraged to employ methods proven effective within their context and for their specific target user groups, ranging from digital outreach to on-site engagement using tablets or printed surveys as needed. Surveys will be offered in multiple languages, and test leaders will assist participants with lower digital literacy."

How will the results of the surveys be used?

"As well as being used to assess the influence of various diversity aspects on mobility needs, attitudes, and the acceptance and adoption of CCAM, the survey findings will also support the validation and refinement of the Diversify-CCAM conceptual model and provide necessary data for the development of the D-Tool, expected at a later stage of the project."

How long will the data collection last? What are the next steps?

"Data collection starts at the end of April 2025, and is expected to take up to two months, although this may vary depending on the unique conditions and target groups of each pilot site. The outcome of the surveys will be gathered and discussed at workshops with relevant stakeholders at both local and international level."
