Frankfurt (am Main) is the 5th largest city in Germany with a population of more than 750.000.

Frankfurt is the center of an inter-connected metropolitan region and an important transportation hub in Germany.
One area of interest is Frankfurt – Riederwald with a population of 4650 persons. Riederwald is one of the smallest districts in Frankfurt with an age structure similar to that of the whole city of Frankfurt. In 2023 automated shuttles operated in Frankfurt Riederwald as part of the project SHOW. Additional areas to be considered to enhance results are the neighborhoods in the greater metropolitan area of Frankfurt.

Geographical relevance

The climate is temperate and geographically the city lies on the banks of the river Main and is surrounded by hilly terrains.

Frankfurt’s population is composed of Germans and a large share of people with diverse ethnic backgrounds. The city is multicultural with a vibrant cultural and international scene which encourages intercultural exchange. The religious landscape in Frankfurt is characterized by a mix of Christian denominations, Moslems, other smaller religious communities, and a predominantly secular population. 
 
Policy relevance

Frankfurt has approved a SUMP in 2015. Germany is taking a leading role in CCAM and is a frontrunner in putting in place a new legal framework for automated driving to support the deployment of autonomous vehicles. In the Frankfurt metropolitan area several CCAM pilots are conducted.
